How to Ask Teachers for Recommendation Letters

Start Early

Ask teachers at least one month before your earliest deadline. Spring of junior year is ideal timing.

Choose the Right Teachers

Pick teachers who know you well and can speak to your academic abilities and character. Junior year teachers are usually best.

Ask in Person First

Don't send an email request. Ask face-to-face, then follow up with an email containing all necessary details.

Provide a Resume or Brag Sheet

Give teachers a document with your accomplishments, activities, and goals. This helps them write a stronger letter.

Say Thank You

Write a handwritten thank you note after they submit. Let them know where you get accepted.
